Cybersecurity in Emergency Communications Systems – Beyond the Manufacturers

This presentation makes the case that Cybersecurity for Emergency Communications Systems (ECS), including Fire Alarm Systems, Emergency Voice/Alarm Communication Systems (EVACS), and Mass Notification Systems (MNS), only starts with systems manufacturers. ECS systems are part of a supply chain that goes backwards from the manufacturers to their suppliers, and forward through the engineering design teams, installation and service firms, inspectors, all the way to building owners and end users. For cybersecurity to be effective, there must be a coordinated effort across all system stakeholders. Security is only as effective as the weakest link in the chain.

Michael Pallett has been active in the design and development of emergency communications systems over his forty-year career. During that time, he led engineering teams in the development of communications systems for colleges & universities, nuclear power plants, hospitals and retirement homes, and correctional facilities, ultimately focusing on Power over Ethernet based distributed communications systems, primarily targeting K-12 schools. Michael is a member of NFPA 72’s Emergency Communication Systems technical committee and worked closely with the Fundamentals Technical Committee on Chapter 11- Cybersecurity, both for the 2022 and 2025 edition.
Michael is also a member of several UL technical panels focusing on life safety systems for Fire, Mass Notification, Hospital Nurse Call, Two-way Emergency Communications Systems for Rescue Assistanceway and Emergency Call Systems for Assisted Living Facilities. Michael is a Certified Risk Management Professional, Certified in Cybersecurity, President of Pallett Corner Consulting with an emphasis on Codes and Standards relating to Life Safety systems, Cybersecurity, and Mass Notification Risk Assessment with a focus on K-12 schools.
