Reviewing Performance-Based Designs – Part 1

Performance-based design approaches should be based on a rational analysis and not be dependent on an assortment of arbitrary decisions. This two-part (2 hours total) webinar will review what questions should be asked by designers and code officials when reviewing a submittal of a performance-based design.
The content of the webinar will include:
What is performance-based design and what motivates a design team to use this approach rather than a prescriptive approach?
What is a design fire and what processes can used to select them?
In the supporting technical report:
Were appropriate calculation methods used for the analysis?
How were inputs determined?
How was conservatism or a factor of safety incorporated into the analysis?
How will assumed conditions or inputs be maintained over the life of the building?
Who should attend:

Dr. Jim Milke, P.E. | Senior Principal Engineer | Fire and Risk Alliance
Dr. Jim Milke, P.E., is a Senior Principal Engineer with Fire and Risk Alliance. He is also Professor Emeritus and past chair of the Department of Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland. He received his PhD in Aerospace Engineering, MS degree in Mechanical Engineering and BS degree in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland. In addition, he has a BS degree in Physics from Ursinus College. He has been a member of the faculty of the Department of Fire Protection Engineering for over 40 years. Jim was the Fire Protection Engineer for Fairfax County, VA and a Research Fire Prevention Engineer at NIST. He is a Fellow and past president of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE). He is a Life Member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and a current member and past chair of the NFPA committee on Smoke Management Systems. He has received awards for teaching, communications, and service from the University of Maryland, NFPA, SFPE, Automatic Fire Alarm Association, American Fire Sprinkler Association and Siemens Building Technology Division.
