It’s well documented that smoke alarms and detectors save lives. They detect and alert people to fire in its early stages, giving them time to escape the dwelling or building safely. Properly operating smoke alarms can mean the difference between life and death during a fire. 

Research studies have shown that fires today burn hotter and faster therefore leaving people less time to safely escape when the alarm sounds than 40 years ago. Today the window of escape time in flaming fires is 3 minutes compared to 17 minutes in the 1976. Smoke alarms and fire alarm systems provide value when builing occupants are awake, but their greatest benefit is when the occupants are asleep. Fifty percent of civilian fire fatalities in residential buildings occur between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The majority of commercially available audible alarm notification applainaces today produce an audible fire alarm signal between 2KHz and 4KHz, and nearly all integral smoke alarm sounders produce a 3KHz audible alarm signal. Numerous research studies have concluded that a low frequency audible alarm signal with a fundamental frequency of 520 Hz is the most effective signal for awakening people who are hard of hearing, school age children and the elderly. These research studies have led to new low frequency signaling requirements in the 2010 edition of NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code ®, NFPA 720, Standard for the Installation of Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detection and Warning Equipment,UL 464, Standard for Safety Audible Signal Appliances, and UL 217, Single and Multiple Station Smoke Alarms.

Denver International Airport (DIA) is the fifth-busiest airport in the United States and the thirteenth busiest airport in the world. It is the largest airport site in North America and the second largest in the world with a property of 53 square miles. While opened in February 1995, design began in the late 1980's and DIA's fire alarm system was designed and installed based on the 1990 National Fire Alarm Code. Faced with the need to replace the existing fire alarm system, DIA management determined to update their notification system in accordance with the 2010 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, including Chapter 24 for Emergency Communication Systems. Utilizing a number of existing systems at DIA, an integrated Emergency Communication System has been implemented to coordinate audible announcements with video displays for the hearing impaired throughout the Complex. This new system allows for coordinated messages for both fire and non-fire events. This presentation will address the requirements of NFPA 72 Chapter 24, the steps necessary to integrate the existing systems into a coordinated ECS, challenges to system implementation, technological options, and general system functionality.

Proven & effective when working and accessible, the fire extinguisher is the only component of occupancy’s fire safety program that requires human interaction.  In commercial occupancies, the crucial components of a building’s fire suppression & detection are required to be monitored continually for activation: Sprinkler systems, Smoke Detection, Heat Detection & Engineered Suppression systems;   the fire extinguisher is the only component not presently required to be monitored for activation.  This is changing.

In 2011, the state of New Hampshire became the first state to mandate monitored fire extinguishers within most newly constructed occupancies.  The webinar will look at the positive impact an operable fire extinguisher may have on a fire, the tragic consequences of extinguishers being inoperable at a time of need, the technology to electronically monitor fire extinguishers, the evolution of the fire code to recognize the technology, a closer look at the New Hampshire process and how a larger step will impact end users, AHJs and distributors.

Several models of aspirating smoke detectors (ASD) have been comparatively evaluated for alarm sensitivity in various operating environments.  Tests have been conducted evaluating sensitivity in very early warning applications and moderate to highly contaminated environments.  Accelerated life cycle testing in high contamination atmospheres was also conducted.  Testing monitored the impacts on detector sensitivity resulting from both hardware contamination and software response, including both drift compensation and alarm threshold adjustment software.  Sensitivity test results for various models of ASD will be presented and discussed as part of this webinar.
